CKUK's the word

British Actor opens specialist voice-over recording studio

Voice-over work can be a particularly lucrative sideline for actors. British actor Christopher Kent has gone one step further than most by establishing CKUK Studios, a specialist voice-over recording studio within The Courtyard, a converted 19th Century coach house in the Pitshanger district of London's leafy W5.

Managed by Kent's CKUK Spoken Words company, the studio has been built from the ground up, and can accommodate up to four artists at any one time. Its control room features a Digidesign Pro Tools HD DAW with a 192 I/O, a Digidesign/Focusrite Control 24 control surface, Neumann and Focusrite mics and preamps, timecode-equipped DAT, CDR, and Apple's Final Cut Pro nonlinear video editing system. Everything is mirrored between its two rooms, so that the engineer can control both Pro Tools and multi-format ISDN (including apt-X, MPEG, and G722) from wherever they are working. CKUK has also invested in a dedicated ftp site to allow for rapid delivery of large file formats, usually within 24 hours of recording.

Technology aside, client comfort is an important part of working at CKUK. Air conditioning is offered throughout the building, as is an endless supply of tea and coffee, with a comfortable lounge area above the ground-floor studio, together with the CKUK production office from where Kent and his team handle everything from script consultancy and multilingual translation, to casting and direction.
